Custom walnut kitchen cabinets

At Cuisine Idéale, walnut has been part of our custom cabinetry expertise since 1971. Over five decades, we have delivered more than 250,000 cabinets across North America, each crafted to the exact dimensions and finish of the home it occupies.

Few species have the presence of walnut. As a premium hardwood, it is among the most sought-after materials for high-end kitchens.

High-end walnut cabinetry isn't chosen from a catalog. Homeowners, designers, and contractors customize every detail, from the initial sketch to final installation, working with our master cabinetmakers who oversee every board and every joint.

WALNUT

Why walnut kitchen cabinets are a staple in luxury kitchens

With its deep chocolate-brown hues, straight or striking grain, and a patina that evolves into a softer golden brown, walnut has earned its place in fine cabinetry for generations. Walnut kitchen cabinets stand at the pinnacle of luxury: warmth without a rustic feel, sophistication without coldness, and a wood that pairs with almost any countertop, hardware, and color palette.

The grain of walnut is generally straight, punctuated by more pronounced areas, knots, mineral streaks, and swirls. Each board has its own character. Light brown sapwood sits alongside medium-to-dark brown heartwood, creating the color variation typical of walnut cabinets.

The real question isn't whether walnut is beautiful, but how it compares to other species.

On the Jankascale, American black walnut sits at about 1010 lbf: a little less than red oak, but dense enough for decades of daily use.

ONE MATERIAL, MANY EXPRESSIONS

American black walnut adapts to your style: stains and finishes

Three species are used to make walnut kitchen cabinets: American black, European, and Claro. Our primary species is American black walnut (Juglans nigra), which is the most available and has the most pronounced grain. European walnut (Juglans regia) is paler with a more subtle grain. Claro walnut offers the most spectacular grain but is rarely available in sufficient quantities for a full kitchen.

Walnut takes stains and clear finishes uniformly. Three stains are particularly well-suited to it:

  1. Grand Marnier: A reddish-brown amber that intensifies chocolate undertones, ideal for traditional and transitional styles.
  2. Buffalo: A deeper, medium brown for a serious, architectural look.
  3. Natural: A clear finish that lets the color of the heartwood speak for itself, with a patina that develops freely.

Each stain reacts differently depending on the grain. Compare samples under the lighting in your home.

Walnut cabinet doors in our seven collections

The character of walnut changes depending on the door style. The same board looks traditional behind a raised panel. Behind a Shaker frame? Transitional. Behind a flat door, contemporary.

Our seven collections cover this spectrum: Regency, Oxford, and Monaco for traditional, Scotstown for transitional Shaker, and Linea, Westport, and Visso for contemporary. See our walnut projects in our portfolio.
