Custom red oak kitchen cabinets

At Cuisine Idéale, oak has been part of our custom cabinetry expertise since 1971. In over fifty years, we have delivered more than 250,000 cabinets across North America, each crafted to the exact dimensions, door style, and finish of the home where it is installed.

Few hardwoods possess the quiet authority of red oak. Its warmth improves with age, and its durability has earned it a place in fine cabinetry for generations.

A custom oak kitchen cabinet is not a catalog purchase. Homeowners, contractors, and designers customize every detail with us, and every board passes through the hands of our master cabinetmakers, from the first sketch to the final installation.

Red oak

Why red oak is a staple in high-end kitchens

Oak cabinets are first recognized by their grain. The open grain has a pronounced structure, with a cathedral pattern when flat-sawn, and a tighter, straighter grain when quarter-sawn. Light catches the open pores, revealing a depth that maple or walnut simply don't have.

Oak is durable enough to last for years in a kitchen, and beautiful enough to make a room timeless.

On the Jankahardness scale, red oak measures 1290 lbf, placing it firmly among wood kitchen cabinets designed for decades of use. Its reddish undertones give the cabinetry a subtle glow that no painted surface can replicate. Compare it to ourwalnut kitchen cabinets to measure the difference in grain and hue.

ONE MATERIAL, MANY EXPRESSIONS

Red oak adapts to your style: stains, lacquers, and finishes

The open grain of oak naturally absorbs stain unevenly: more pigment in the pores, less on the smooth surfaces. The result is a color variation and depth that uniform-grain species cannot replicate. Staining oak is a craft in itself. Three stains from our collection are particularly well-suited to it:

  1. Grand Marnier: a rich reddish-brown amber that intensifies the natural undertones, ideal for traditional and transitional kitchens
  2. Buffalo: a darker, more composed medium brown for a serious, architectural look
  3. Natural: a clear, elegant protective finish that lets the light brown to honey tones of the wood speak for themselves

For a darker, more dramatic palette, our hand-applied Caviar, Nori, and Black Bean lacquers allow the grain to show through rather than hiding it.

Red oak cabinet doors across our seven collections

The character of oak changes depending on the door style you pair it with. The same board can look traditional behind a raised panel. Behind a Shaker frame, it becomes transitional; behind a flat panel, it’s contemporary.

All seven of our collections are available in oak: Regency, Oxford, and Monaco for traditional, Scotstown for the transitional Shaker door, and Linea, Westport, and Visso for contemporary. See them in action inour projects.
